About Me

Hello, my name is Maleng, and I'm in my second year of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Canterbury. I aspire to be the best engineer, and I believe this requires understanding various aspects of engineering, including electrical, mechatronics, software, and computer engineering. This is why I have undertaken a variety of projects. My aspiration drives me to learn from my mistakes and strive for excellence.

I averaged excellence throughout college. In 2022, I achieved first place at the Nationals in New Zealand for single barrel DTL, became the president of the chess club, and won the first chess match for St. Kevin's College against Waitaki Boys' in the past decade. In 2021, I was part of the First XV for rugby and the First XI for hockey. I achieved this because I am willing to do whatever it takes to be the best at what I do and never give up.

My family has a farming heritage. My dad grew up on a sheep farm near Otautau, and my mother grew up in a longhouse in Borneo (Malaysia), with a heritage of being rice farmers. When I was young, my father traveled a lot around Asia because of work. Currently, my father has a farm near the Longwoods at Tuatapere (a view of the farm in the background at the top), and I enjoy helping him out with fencing, building and fixing things, hunting, fishing, and the outdoors in general.

Projects

Aerospace/Aviation

Level 1 Rocketry

As part of a group project, we designed and conducted research using CFD software to reach the theoretical maximum apogee. We then assembled the rocket and successfully launched and recovered it.

Level 2 Rocketry - continuing

Individually, I designed, developed, and researched a rocket using the same process as Level 1 Rocketry, but I manufactured the rocket from scratch.

Flight Computer

Design and manufacture a flight computer using Kicad through the UC Aerospace Club PCB tutorial.

Hot Rockets Lunch System - continuing

Cost analysis, development, planning, and assembly of a Hot Rocket system

L1/L2 Flight Computer - continuing

I’m currently assisting with the sensors for designing a flight computer for the UC Aerospace Club.

Robotics/Biomedical

2024 - Secretery for UC Biomediecal Club

Meltdown (Vex)

Design and assemble an autonomous and manually controlled robot capable of performing a set of tasks using sensors and AI.

Warman - continuing

Design and manufacture an autonomous robot capable of performing a set of tasks through precise calculations.

Robotic prostetic hand - continuing

Assemble a prosthetic hand to be donated to individuals with missing limbs who are in need of a temporary replacement.

Junkyard - continuing

Participate in the UC Robotics Combat Robot Event. Build a robot from scrap materials and compete against other robots.

Automotive

Toyota 1KZ engine

I disassembled and assembled a 1KZ engine from a Toyota Surf.
